vpn and dlink routers and dynamic ip's

Hi. I am setting up a home network for a friend. I can handle the network portion ok, It will be a dlink 614 + with a ADSL provider
who only offers dynamic ip address's. The wireless card will be a Cisco 3500 model.

Now the question. He wants to communicate with his office using VPN. The Dlink people claim that they support VPN pass-through, but I know nothing about VPN and I want to be sure that he can
access his office, as this is the main reason for the installation.

I have read posts here that refer to VPN problems related to dynamic ip assignments.

Any suggestions? I think it is a CISCO VPN software/hardware config.

As long as it is not Nortel Contivity VPN software you should be fine jsut opening up port 500 on your residential gateway. Contivity is not working well with D-link stuff at the moment.

Post DLINK VPN

Most VPNs work good on these routers. I have actually gotten Nortell conectivaty & client conected. Make sure that the LAN IP adress of the ofiice is not on the same subnet as the Dlink subnet.
But by just opening port 500 you should be fine.

Folks, I have to warn you that router supporting VPN pass-through does not necessarily guarantee successful VPN connection. There are several implementations of VPN and not all of them play nicely with NAT, for example. Here's the link to very helpful article on this problem:
