Advice Wanted

Hi,
I am considering starting up a wirless network/internet but don't know anything about it. I would like to set up a wireless network/internet over a mile radious and there are tree's in the way but pretty much only tree's. I'm going to be getting satellite internet from directway and I want to share with anyone who has the loginname/password.There will be 5 or 6 people relativley close who will want to connect would it be faster to hardwire them in and if so how should i go about doing that? So for my question What do I need to buy for hardware and software and all that good stuff. I live in maine so i can't get anything other then satellite internet or an extreamly unreliable dial-up.
If some poeple could give me some advice thanks it would all be appreciated or a good web site or two that I should check out.

great project

First point to look at is the speed of the directway. Seems I remember that service is around 128 K down and up. ALso the last one I saw had a USB 1.1 connection to a pc that had to run a driver to log in and support the antenna.

Get at least a 1 watt amp on an access point up in the air with an omni whip say with 5.5 DB gain (don't break the law on the 36 db max) without FCC approval.

You need to mount everything you can on the mast up high for low loss due to cabling length. Pine trees can atenuate a signal some so you really need to get over most of them. Users are going to have to get some Client antennas outside probably to get any signal at a mile. You can set up a point to multipoint and try that mode for a few users.

Good luck and please post your results.

It's gonna be a little while because i just orderd the satellite internet yesterday and it's going to take like a month before it's set up

isn't there a way people can use it (wireless internet) without them having to buy antena's?

How would i go about hooking people's homes up with a wires from my house to thier's? Some are right on the same street.

And as far as law's and such we make out own law's around here >
So what's the most powerfull stuff i can buy?

Thanks for you're help greatly appreciated.

I use Direcway and I have a wireless setup(just my house). They claim you can get 256kb a second. You'd definitely be better off with a DSL or Cable access. If you're stuck like me then Direcway definitely beats dial-up and it's the way to go. I have the dial return now but initially I had the dual return system. I had so many latency issues with my FTP and CRT sessions that I had to get rid of it. Someone told me the dial return was the way to go.
Good luck!
