WiMAX in Southern California...

Hey folks,

So I have a new Thinkpad w/ the Intel WiFi Link 5350 which includes WiFi and WiMAX.

Are there any ETA's as far as when WiMAX might be coming to Los Angeles, or anywhere in Southern California?

I've also read that the two biggest cellular carriers AT&T and Verizon Wireless will not be supporting WiMAX, but LTE (Long-Term Evolution) instead.

Sprint continues to say that it will go the WiMAX route, but Sprint may not be around much longer, and many people believe that WiMAX is a dead technology.

GSM and CDMA are a good example for a comparison of what will soon be an abandoned technology. That being CDMA of course. Once Verizon goes 4G by way of LTE, it will join AT&T, and most every other country in the world that has been using GSM, not CDMA, and all of which are almost certain to be pursuing LTE, and not WiMAX for their 4G networks.

Canada's Bell, and Telus cell carriers, the last two CDMA carriers in that country have also announced that they will be converting to HSPA/HSPA+ (GSM/3G) and not continue with CDMA.

Any thoughts?

Last I heard, maybe back in April of 08, Sprint was in fact launching a wimax network in LA. I believe I read that in the LA Times but I cant seem to find the article. Then I read back in October that Clearwire was teaming up with Sprint on the LA project. I also heard that a company called Towerstream offers WiMax in LA.
