my free ride is over ....

ok they just built a new apt building down the block and for whatever reason they have set up a public wifi am guessing for tennants. there was no password to get it and i had a perfect signal of 100 and link of 100 and my wifi worked pefect for about 3 months . now i can still get signal from them but cant connect ? on the list of wifis in my area it still comes up with no password needed ..when i connect it gives me ip subnet mask but the gateway comes up 0.0.0.0 ? now when i connect to another wifi it gives me gateway numbers ? i thought it was my pc so i tried laptop and wont let me connect any more to that awesome wifi of 100 signal......what am i doing wrong here ? could they have just pinpointed me and blocked me out ?

Probably few others that do not live in the building do the same Wrong.

I.e, "free loading" on a system that they are not suppose to use.

There are few security measures that will close a Wireless Network and would Not necessary appear as a secure system in the client computers Wireless Manager.

hmmmm. Is that like leaving your keys in your car means I can drive it and use your gas instead of mine?

You are probably getting the default IP and subnet mask generated by Windows when DHCP fails. They may be controlling DHCP lease assignments on mac addresess or using some other method such as assigning static IP addresses. Just because there is no password it is not necessarily a public network. Think about a no password network as if it is your living space and your front door is unlocked. There is no key required to get in but I don't think you would like it if a stranger came through your door uninvited.

Wireless security password is a variable in actually establishing a Wireless connection connection.

DHCP is the server that provides the IP to the computer to allow the computer to work on the Network. DHCP can be set Not to provide an IP to a "Foreign computer" even if the Wireless per-se is not blocked.
