I'll start from the top, since I'm not sure if this is even possible.
The site is my friends house, which is 5500 sq. ft, mostly on one level. Our challenge (since this isn't mission critical) is to build a wireless network that will cover the entire site while using the same SSID and security. We should be able to take a laptop from one end of the site to the other and seamlessly transition from one AP to the other. Oh yeah, and it has to be reasonably fast. Am I dreaming?
I know repeating and WDS halve the speed because everything has to be transmitted twice, so my idea was to run an Ethernet cable between the two routers to act as the backchannel and increase the speed. Feel free to tell me I have no idea what I'm talking about, cause you'd probably be right. From what I understand, dual radio setups do this with the 802.11a channel and the 802.11b/g channel. Could we use the ethernet cable like the 802.11a channel since the WRT54G isn't a dual channel radio? Basically we want a faster setup than repeating or WDS offer.
Please tell me your thoughts, if it's been done before, if it's possible, etc. If it's not possible, what would be our best alternative?
