Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and needing much help! I recently bought a house not far from my parents house but can't get high speed internet there. No cable lines down my road, was told phone lines are not good enough for high speed also. Only high speed I could get is satellite. At my parents house I have high speed cogeco (cable) which is my account. I would like to send the signal over to my house if possible. I need someone to tell me exactly everything I need and what to buy (routers/antennas/cable's - brand/model/type etc.) and how to set this all up. I want it to be sercure/fast and reliable.

If I stand next to my house, with a pair of binoculars I can see my parents roof top, I would like to say there is a clear line of sight but I think I might run into a tree or so. I think nlos antennas would be best but I'm no expert, thats why I'm here. According to google earth the distance between the two house's is 0.63 miles. My house is also at a higher elevation than my parents house again according to google earth 29.52' higher. My parents house is a two story, the sigal would be shooting mostly through open fields but might run into tree or so in way. I have no problems putting up outdoor antenna's at both locations and running any neccessary wires through the house's. At my house there will be a desktop and laptop(currently at my parents). At my parents there will be no computers left there, but I would like to take my laptop there and still be able to connect wirelessly if possible.
I hope you guys can help me. I am not a computer genious and just need some desperate help to get internet.
thank you in advance.

Basics:

I have not used them myself, but everybody who has tried Ubiquiti Bullets loves them. Outdoor AP / bridge that mounts to the N connector on the dish. One CAT5 cable with POE, so one wire to run. They communicate with each other and fine tune their parameters for the link, so you get the highest speed possible. Not expensive.

how secure is this type of set up? Sorry, but let me see if I understand this right. Run cat 5 cable with poe to a bullet and the bullet connects to an outdoor antenna, is this right? How about routers? Do I need to have two routers that are the same brand and have them configured?
thank you for replying ad5mb

anyone else have some input or suggestions on making me a bridge?

Do I need to have two routers that are the same brand and have them configured?

the equipment does not have to be the same brand. the whole point of wifi certification is to verify compatibility between brands.

I have four links at my house:

WRT54G configured as a bridge to my neighbors house; 30 feet. He has an Actiontech router

WRT54G configured as a bridge to my motorhome; 50 feet. Motorhome has a WRT54G as a wireless router.

WRT54G configured as a bridge to a hotspot in the town plaza; 758 feet. Hotspot has a netgear router.

WRT54G configured as a bridge to a hotspot in city hall; 450 feet. They use a 2Wire router.

You need a router at the end that has internet. You need an AP at the end that has internet. A wireless router is both in one package.

I think nlos antennas would be best No such thing. Radio waves don't change their behavior based on the antenna they go through.

Plugging numbers into that calculator:
15 dbm transmitter
8 db cable loss at each end ( LMR 200, 50 feet each end )
15 db antennas both ends
signal strength is a marginal -72 db

Use LMR 400 ( 3 db cable loss at each end ) -61 dbm

24 db dish both ends and LMR 400: -40 dbm. More than I get from the router 6 feet away from where I am sitting.

24 db on one end and 15 db on the other: -50 dbm

I would use Linksys WRT54Gs at both ends, with DD-WRT firmware. Someone else will recommend n routers and bridges.

what would be the best cable to use? cat 5 or lmr 400 or??
would circular polarized antennas be better if i encounter obstuctions in the way?

CAT5 cable is the 8 conductor cable used to connect wired network pieces together. LMR-400 is big stiff coax used to make long antenna runs. Neither can be used where the other is intended to work.

would circular polarized antennas be better if I encounter obstructions in the way?

NASA uses circular polarized antennas because spacecraft spin for stability. That is about the only reason to use them.

ok, I just bought a set of wrt 54G's with dd-wrt firmware installed on them both ver. 4. Now, do I remove one of the antennas on the wrt 54g and use lmr 400 cabel to bullet or??
