I've been searching around the internet for a device I can attach to a light switch (or just a wireless light switch) and I have come up dry.

What I want to be able to do is have some sort of compact wifi device attached to a light switch and then be able to control the light through a browser, or smalll program ect. Are there any devices out on the market these days which make that possible?

If there are no simple devices I can buy, would it be possible to do a DIY kind of solution with a wifi adapter and some kind of control where it can intercept the power wire and from there turn the light on and off (or any power outlet for that matter).

I found some older threads on this topic, but none that had any satifactory solutions.

What do you guys think?

Hi System32,

Here is a link which might address your issue; http://www.controlbyweb.com/webrelay/index.html is this project internal or external? Why Wi-Fi, have you not considered solar?

To answer your question this project IS internal and more of a test to see what I can do with wifi.

I probably should have guessed that the solution would be more expensive then what I was looking for but I thought it was worth a try to see if anyone is doing this kind of thing in their home as well.

Look into the world of X10 home automation!
I'm using it here . I have an older model CM 11a hooked to a computer and several wall plugs and light switches / modules / lamp controllers. I also have the remote control device and can flip lights and change channels 2 seconds later.
The devices send and receive there commands over the homes electrical wiring.

The CM11A is connected via serial cable , How ever there is a newer model CM15A that is usb. The device can be pre programmed to run fully automatically. IE the lights I want on are on just before I get up in the morning and shut off at daylight when I set them too.
For control over the internet I use remote desktop or logmein .

Check into it PM me if you have any questions.

Hi System32,

I get your point; if you wanted to suggest a product placement of this item; https://www.asseenontvnetwork.com/handyswitch/?cid=501349 there was another way. Stick, Click, and how Slick! However, this one is on me, my billing system is down at this time. :) :(
