start here:

http://www.terabeam.com/support/calculations/som.php

typical consumer equipment would have 15 dbm, 0 cable loss, 2.1 db gain antenna.

signal strength under -70 dbm ( -80 is under -70 ) would not be worth the effort.

Hello Dubbley,

There is an old saying; "You can't make an omelet and not break eggs." What's the problem; Are you currently giving the service away? What do you or will you do for authentication?

If not, consider moving the service from say, (10 users in your Hotspot to 15 times that). If you're gonna do it; do it right.

got software and charging, the eason for not wanting to put up repeaters is that i live is south africa and we have some strange bi-laws in town, need to apply for a licince to cross a public road with a wifi signal by making use of reapers, also one for using a amp to boost my singnal

Hi Dubbley,

Thanks for clearing that up; I don't offer solutions unless I've got some idea of what is being addressed. Now lets get to the point. That is not a reason for not deploying repeaters. Neither are those "strange by-laws" and are in place for a purpose, it's not easy, otherwise everyone would be doing it.

You have got to do a cost analysis, apply for whatever licenses you need and get the job done. There is no point half-stepping, when you begin to show greater revenue, you're going to have to reveal where its coming from, then an investigation starts.....:o

If you put up an Omnidirectional or Directional antenna to get the signal cross-town; What do you think you are doing? Another old saying, quote: "You can hide and buy land, but you can't hide and work it."

Let's face it, you see the need for the service, you've got the technology, approach the government, NGO or investors in a joint venture; have them underwrite the costs. Sell them the idea! Get to it! 5 miles maybe too big for this solution, but here's a start! ;)
