I have a 5 bedroom, 2 story, plaster walled house built in 1920. Students living there require wireless Internet access in all rooms. A conventional wireless router on the ground floor does not reach all the rooms on either floor. Nor does a booster on the second floor help. What equipment would you recommend?

You might look into the (power line networking) google that term.
My self I think it's the hoarse hair in the plaster that makes the wifi buzz around like hoarse flies!
If it were my house , I'd do my best to run cat5 from the router on the 1st floor up to the second and attach an access point or another router.

put the wireless router on the ground floor near windows. Get a repeater at second floor near window also. Make sure repeater can relay the signal up. problem solved.

I would recommend using apple airports in WDS mode. Sure, they are expensive, but they work very well in WDS mode. You would probably get away with having one on the first floor and one on the second floor. Nothing beats running just little bit of cat5 though.
