Hi guy's I'm thinking about starting a small WISP and wanted to know what sort of hardware I need :). I want the connection to extend to about 10kms and would like to have about 500 users. What do I need and how much should it cost ? how many access points do AI need ect.

Hope to hear from you soon

This is a pretty tall order. The number of access points would depend on the local terrain features and subscriber density. You want a range of 6 miles and that will require hundreds of small APs or about 30 towers. If you went cheap you could probably get this done for about $1,000,000 but you would have an infrastructure that would be difficult to scale.

Now you know why these WISP projects have a tendency to fail. The ROI is extremely low.

Hi Ground Zero,

It has been a year since you've been thinking; (Sept, 07) and several replies and posts later you have asked this same question, (Not even in different forms). I am sure you have been given some good and solid advice. Here is my last bit of advice to you.
There are some good books on equipment, including this *http://www.amazon.com/Wi-Fi-Toys-Wireless-Projects-Entertainment/dp/0764558943; then, never mind 500 users, try one or more of those small projects, and I mean this in all sincerity.
Start with yourself, your next door neighbors and across the street. Do us in this forum, and yourself this favor.

*Note: (It's the 3rd time I have suggested this book. I've recently acquired it, and there is no financial benefit on my part).
