My PC seems a bit confused about my wireless connection.
I'm sharing an informal LAN with my neighbors downstairs, who are using an unsecured network with a linksys wireless router. I'm on a desktop PC using Windows XP and a linksys wireless-g USB adapter. My two roommates have no trouble whatsoever connecting to the same network on their laptops, even though they are usually farther away from the router. I've moved my PC to the corner of my room with the best reception/signal strength (I'm practically on top of the router!), but my computer is still behaving strangely and giving me all sorts of conflicting information.
After I first turn on the PC, it starts "acquiring the network address" and rarely seems to find it. But sometimes it does connect (or at least it tells me so). In either case, I have access to the internet for five, maybe ten minutes before I lose the connection. When I refresh the list of available networks, I am once again able to access the internet using the same network, even though the computer insists that I'm "not connected." And even though my status is "not connected", the computer tells me: "You are currently connected to this network. To disconnect from this network, click Disconnect below."
So essentially, I can use this network, but I have to constantly refresh the networks list every 5-10 minutes, and my PC seems to insist that it's both connected and disconnected at the same time. It obviously is able to access the network -- but then why does it keep losing the connection at apparently regular intervals? And why is it giving me conflicting information?
I'm sure there's an obvious answer. I'm just easily frustrated and not very technically inclined. Thanks to anyone for any help they can offer. ;)
