I see Registry Mechanic is sold on a one year "subscription basis" per their terms of use on their web site.

I'm not quite sure if I know what that means. Anyone here use Registry Mechanic?

Does that mean it stops working after the year subscription? Or that the support stops, but I can keep using the program?

I've not tried this particular utility but typically these subscription based licenses provide only updates to the application signatures so while the utility will continue to operate, it would be doing so with old information. Kind of like running Norton Anti-virus with last years updates, it wouldn't do much good.

They do have a FAQ (http://www.infopackets.com/cgi-bin/fdse.pl?Terms=Registry+Mechanic+Frequently+Asked+Q uestions)however it's not very informative.

Hi Bobby,

I have not tried this utility software and would not want to register a product, especially software with anyone longer than I have to. Further, it is excellent marketing; get you for the first year, got you for life. I've included a couple of links; one on FAQs of the subject matter here.

http://www.infopackets.com/channels/en/windows/gazette/2005/20050223_registry_mechanic_frequently_asked_questi ons.htm and this one as well; http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,56338-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/description.html.

I therefore hope these help to answer your questions.

Good Luck!

why even bother with registry software? None of the registry cleaners, "mechanics", ect.... rarely even work, they actually can cause more harm they they do of fixing anything.

You'd be better off backing up, and doing a format and reinstall of windows.

I would have to agree. I've never had any real success with any of the "tuning" or "Speed Increase" type utilties for Windows and as an IT analyst, I've tried many of them. However for folks who like to dable, but dont have a good understanding of the registry, it may help to clean up the system.

Now I'm worried that I tried it.

I hope it didn't screw up anything on my computer.

The ad said it was safe, but now I wonder about that.

One big reason I tried it, was my Veritas back up keeps bombing out at the dnd of the backup session. I ran several spyware and adware programs to try to clean up things and the Veritas still bombed out. I even did a defrag and some other Windows clean up (I can't remember the name of it). It was something with a /f. It's done from the command line. That didn't help either.

So the Registry Mechanics was the only other thing I could think of to try to keep my Veritas backup from bombing at the end of the backup.

And all applications were turned off. And screen saver was disabled. And my Zone Alarm was turned off.

I have a completely seperate internal hard drive, that I wanted to back up my two raided hard drives up to.

Thanks much for the info on the Registry program. I guess I'll hold off on using it any more. I just might delete it from my computer.

They're right. Registry tweakers usually cost most harm than good or do nothing at all. Like Ram optimizers, you are better off restarting your computer than use any of those memory optimizers.

Anyways to answer your question, if its a anti virus or similar that updates itself regularly, then after the subscription period, no more updates for you. But if its not then usually you won't be able to use the program after that.
