hi

i live in the city and can access a nearby wifi hotspot, and was wondering a few things about improving signal strength...

does a 7db aerial upgrade improve reception or just transmission?
would an upgrade from 802.11b to 11g improve signal strength or just data speed?
can i connect an AP to their AP by changing to identical MAc addressess and SSIDS or nah?

thankyou for you help

Moving to G would not improve signal quality unless the receiver /transmitter was of better design that your current model.
If you want to have better signal from 1 location to 1 location a directional antenna is what your looking for. From a home brew reflector added to an omni directional ( to make it Directional) to a home brew cantenna to a biquad (home made as well) Or a comercial yagi or parabolic grid .

Almost any AP can be set up to act as a wireless client and be cabled back to your computer. Setting the AP closer or in a window might improve your signal. Keep in mind that what ever antenna you use will suffer signal loss that will track with the length of and quality of coax used.

IE you would be better off with an AP in a weather proof box outside on the roof with 50 feet of cat 5 cable back to your PC than you would be having a directional antenna and 50 feet of coax running back to your card or AP.

Before I build an antenna I was wondering if you had any experience with an Intel 2011 AP its about 7 years old and quite difficult to use, am I right in assuming the Access Point will have greater coverage than just a USB WiFi Device?
In Setting up the AP what have I done wrong?

Hotspot IP: 124.157.84.126
bssid: 0A-02-6F-45-84-EC
ssid: Orcon....
Channel:11

So I set the AP via the Web Browser Interface

IP: 124.157.84.132
bssid: same as hotspot (fails to connect) or its own Mac address (creates independent network with identical ssid)
various other setting changes like priority, trap host, seem to have no effect.

It just can't 'see' the hotspot. Will Intel APs only connect with eachother?

I just want it to act as a repeater but i dont know how. Hope you can help, thanks.

I think from reading some of the manual at intel's site that this model will bridge and act as an Ap but not a Client.

I would try and contact Intel support and ask them if this model will connect as a wireless client to any other Ap.
