Hi,

I am experiencing frequent (about every other day) disconnections with my Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router. By 'disconnections', I mean the internet connection suddenly drops for both the computer wired to the router and the computer receiving the wireless signal.

About a month ago, I spoke with customer service reps for my ISP; they guided me through some tests on the modem and router. At that time, it looked like the DSL modem was at fault, so I replaced the modem. It seemed to help for a week or 2, but then the disconnections started again.

The only way I can seem to reconnect is to shut off the router and then turn it back on again (hence my current assumption that the router itself is causing the problem). I guess it's a simple fix, but it's aggravating to do this about every other day, and sometimes every day or even several times a day.

I've traversed the forums and technical support pages over at linksys.com, and nothing has helped.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what might be wrong with the router, or how I might fix it? Any advice would me much appreciated, as I am rather ignorant when it comes to networking.

Thanks in advance,
Dashel

The box is very software dependent. You will be using Linksys software as there is no after marked available that I know about. Some versions of the Liinksys software have issues. The problem I saw was that video clips often causes the router to lock up. It started happening after I uploaded the latest version of the software.

After doing some web searching I found that others were having the same issue and at the time (3 years ago) you had to roll back to an older version.

Mine would lock up if I went to CNN and downloaded a video almost every time.

Thanks for the input, wiltonh!

I'll keep an eye out for videos to see if there is some kind of correlation for me as well. If so, I guess I'll have to scour the internet to see if there is a better version of software for me to use.

That router is getting a bit old. I might consider upgrading to a newer version and maybe a better one. Not a Pre-N or MIMO style just a good 802.11g style device.
