I had a Linksys router and separate WAP54G for wifi. Everything worked fine; had WEP security, limited access to specific MAC IDs, etc.

When I tried to set up port forwarding so I could get into computer while away (SSH, SFTP), I discovered that Linksys router wouldn't accept port forwarding settings or even update firmware. So, replaced with DI-604. Set up port fowarding, etc., and everything worked.

Except when I went to add a new laptop's MAC to WAP54G I found I could not log in to change settings. After much hassle with DLink, including replacing the router, I still cannot log in to WAP54G. The Wifi works, but due to resetting device, I have lost all security (it's just broadcasting SSID and anyone can log in who comes close to house). I tried to plug WAP54G straight into computer (Mac G4), but still couldn't get it to open up in browser.

Both DLink and store where I bought it say I need to get WAP54G into same IP range (third number of IP) as router, but how do I do that if I can't log in to wifi device by any means? IP Scanner shows "unknown device" in same range as router, but nothing shows up in browser. Default IP for WAP54G doesn't show in IP Scanner and won't work as log in in browser. Ping of "unknown device" works, but shows "(DUP!)" three times for every packet. Ping of WAP54G default results in 100% loss (no packets move). But the da-n thing works! (i.e., it passes wifi computers to internet through router). What the heck is going on?!

Any hints on how to break in to WAP54G, or should I just toss it and buy an access point that I know will work with CI-604 (and if so, what would that be)?

Don't think there's anything wrong with the WAP54G. Look at this link on how to access it and pay close attention to step 2 and 3....

As for making it work with the DLink router, you should assign the WAP54G an IP address that is -not- in the same address space of the DHCP settings on your router.
