newb question - connected, but no internet

i recently moved to a new place and until yesterday, my internet connection was poor but still somewhat functional.

it has not worked since yesterday however.

the wifi card (sorry if my terminology in inaccurate) can detect nearby signals, "connect" to them, but when i try to reach any websites or sign in to any instant messaging programs, nothing happens.

i have a roommate and the router is in his room, his connection seems to be fine.

i tried purchasing a new wifi hardware - D-link rangebooster N desktop adapter - but the results were the same (although the "strength" of the signal shows more green bars).

the results were also the same on both my PC and macbook.

if anyone have any idea on how to resolve this issue, please share!

Are the nearby signals private networks or public? If they are private, joining them is not something this forum condones. If they are public, you may need to determine if there is some sort of login required. Or you signal strength still needs to be enhanced to get the required link quality to associate.
