I have a gateway wireless 802.11 g USB adapter on my desktop pc
I also have a new Netgear WPN824v2, but it did this with the old one too

Basically my conection is really good, almost 54Mbps all the time. However every so often, such as every 20 mins, 1 hour,or a little longer it drops to 2Mbps and I cant connect to the internet even though the usb adapter says it's connected. This does this a lot, I have tried power cycling everything and also using ipconfig in the command prompt but it still ends up doing the same thing.

It's really irratating and I appreciate any help I could get from somebody.

Thank you,
William

Are there any other wireless networks in your area? Have you tried a different channel?

yeah I used netstumbler and there are a few networks from my neighbors, so I'll try a different channel, thank you for the suggestion, im not sure why I didn't think to do that when Ive tried just about everything

Also, make sure you have security enabled and set your router to 802.11g mode only.

It could be that a distant non-erp device (802.11b) is associating with your network and forcing it to go into protection mode which would drop the data rate.

Yeah there is one computer in the house that still uses a pci wireless adapter, I made sure that security has been enabled on the two computers that are wireless.

I switched channels and it seems to go a bit faster but still drops the internet connection, which is nice but speed wasn't really the issue, except for when it drops to 2Mbps lol.

When you switch the channels, do any of them operate any differently or is it just working on a different channel, so I guess what I'm asking is any one channel better than the other??

I appreciate everyone's advice on this too, I'm pretty knowledgeable with computers but really haven't kept up on troubleshooting with wireless since I never really had a problem until I moved back home and was this far away from the router. Thanks again.
