I had a phoneline network before. Recently I purchased a laptop and setup a wireless (802.11b) network.

I have a
1). desktop (Win XP Pro) as the host behind a netgear router ( with Cable modem) and
2). another desktop (Win 98 SE) with netgear wireless USB adapter and
3). a laptop (Win XP home) with netgear wireless PC card) on the network.

I setup the network following the instructions in the CDs that came with the netgear hardware (making sure the SSID is the same for all ,128 bit encryption with the same passphrase and key for all and a unique name for the 3 systems.

I can go online and surf web from all 3 computers but I cannot see the other computers from any computerand cannot share files/printers whatever I do. I have the drives of one computer listed in network places but when I click one of these drives, it either freezes or says I do not have access to the other computer.

Help appreciated.

As your internet connection is OK on all computers, the network is functioning at least. Suggestions for the resource sharing:

a) You need to make sure that the Internet Connection Firewall on the XP machines is NOT enabled on the wireless network adapters, it should only be enabled for the modem.

b) You need to make sure that all machines are in the same workgroup.

c) File and print sharing must be enabled

d) All machines should be using the same network protocol. (probably just TCP/IP but IPX might be an option)

Good Luck.

I think you had jumped a step. Did you install protocol of netBEUI in the network(control panel)? You can check this item and see the result. Good Luck!
