Hey, I just bought a few wireless cards and a wireless router, netgear stuff a MS816 Router and 2 wireless laptop pci cards and a USB MA101. In case the specifics are important.

Anyway, it works great other then the speed, it says it is 11/Mbps @ 802.11b however all over my house even right beside the router I'm only getting dl speeds of a max 1200/kbps. That is two floors up, or even right beside the router.

The computers that are attached via ethernet connection to the router get the obvious 100/Mbps that comes with any ethernet lan and their DL speeds top out at 4200/Kbps. now I know my ISP only can provide 3 - 5 Mbps, so the computers that are hooked up with the ethernet connection can't go any faster, however the wireless can go at 11/Mbps yet don't take advantage of it and hit 1.2/Mbps or 1200/Kbps. This is not even close to the ISP speed of 3mpbs - 4mbps which is the reason for my concern

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

PS, I'm a newbie here and am looking forward to discussing things here as it appears to be a nice forum with some decent members, glad to be aboard.

another detail:

it says (when I hover cursor over the wireless connection icon in the taskbar) excellent - very good from the PC upstairs running the MA101, and always is on excellent on the Laptop with the wirless pci card located besdie/beneath the router, yet the crappy speeds are still the same on both pc's............

thanks again

an update:

After talking to tech support and them suggesting that I change the tate, under the advanced config tab, as well as the preamble type from either auto or long to short. Unfortuantly it did'nt change any of my speeds...... :(

New diagnosis, lol. The DL speed is no longer a problem. It was a confusion of mine between MBps and Mbps and KBps and Kbps. Apparently I'm getting the performance or lcose to that I should.

My final concern is gaming, I seem to get a lot of lag playing warcraft 3. Both on Bnet and over the LAN. This didn't happen before x-mas when we had just a 10/100 hub.

It happens with quite regularity and will have to reconnect to the host then catch-up again. and I've been disconnected a few times.

My speed is great (after solving my confusion) and the signal is ecxellent/very good,

Any suggestions.

Sorry I accidently started this thread in the general, but have moved a string to the appropriate "problems" thread.

Thanks again

ps, tech support has been utterly useless!!!!

I know exactly what the problem is now..... ehhh, an ongoing battle, anyway if I ping the router over and over again about every 60 seconds the ping changes from aprox. 2 - 5 ms up to 3000 - 4000 ms. and then goes back to normal for the exact same amount of time or number of pings then does it again. What an annoyance. Tech support ran me through the same circle of solutions, then blamed my firewall and after I tod him exactly the problem and that I didn't agree with the method he was taking because it was counter-productive hwe got mad lol.

Any idea would be helpfull thanks. the store is sold out of the PCI card so I can't swap just yet.
