Generally each service has it's own software phone. I'm not aware of any generic ones, other than MSN msgrs' latest version.
This looks orphaned but 'openwengo' is open source and xlite is 'free'.

It has been a long time since I posted here but here are some softphones from an old post. They are pretty good. Not open source but good for some testing.

Who offers truly unlimited voip service? I am a home based business so i only need one line, but I also have a team that work form their homes as well. I keep running into providers who say unlimited and then there is a cap.

Now this may sound foolish, but... I buddy of mine brought me one of these things the other day called the "Magic Jack". He picked it up from Walmart for about $20. You plug it into a usb port on your Internet connected computer and within about 5 minutes I was making phone calls after I plugged my house phone into it. No credit card needed for local and long distant calls. International calls on the other hand does have an added fee. I also found out that it will only work for 1 year without renewing the service. In any case, you get one year of service with a local calling number for $20 and you can also choose a number that is or is not in your actual calling area, which could be useful for sales folks. Not bad for 20 bucks!
