Good Evening,
I need to set up a network and would like to know if this is possable. What I need is a wireless network that would allow one hundred users to access the internet, with reasonable bandwidth for each user. The area that I need coverage for is a circle of approx 500ft radius. I am very behind on the technology and don't even know what equipement would be needed. So what I'm asking is this: 1) can this be done, 2) what equipment would be needed, and 3) what sort of internet connection would I need?

Thanks
Tim R

Yes, what you want to do is definately possible. You're asking a pretty big question, but here are some thoughts to get you started...

As the wireless interface, you'll need to install 802.11 access points. The access points interface with each other over wired Ethernet.

For the access points, you'll need to decide on whether to use 802.11b (up to 11Mbps in the 2.4GHz band) or 802.11a (up to 54Mbps in the 5GHz band) or both. If you're deploying a public wireless LAN, then I'd implement 802.11b since most users will be equipped with 802.11b radio cards. If you have control over what radio NICs that users have, then 802.11a would be an option. Part of the decision on which one to deploy also depends on actual performance requirements. The final decision should be based on well-defined requirements.

To control access to the Internet, you'll need a device commonly called an access controller (e.g., Reefedge, Bluesocket) or purchase access points with built-in access control features. In addition, you'll need an authentication server to verify user credentials when they log in to use the system.

In addition to the hardware selections, you'll need to think about what security (if any) that you need to implement. Also, be sure to perform an RF site survey to determine the optimum number and placement of access points.
