Hello all!

Home network currently looks like this:

1) Laptop with Dell wireless card and XP pro
1) Desktop PC with w2k and Dlink Wireless card
1) Desktop PC with w2K hard wired to Dlink 524 wireless router

Everybody above? They are very happy communicating. Now, a new PC has entered the picture with w2k and a Netgear WG311v2. Netgear sees the network (WEP 64bit)...shows connected...IE and other browsers go nowhere. Dlink router "sees" the MAC address of the machine, but that is all. I have turned security on/off, changed modes, everything is as it should be...BUT when running IPconfig, IP address shows 169.245.55.1. The settings under tcp/ip are exactlyl the same as my other w2K wireless machine as prescribed by Dlink. I even typed a manual address/subnet, dns etc and verified the settings using IPconfig, still nothing.

Any compatibility issues with Dlink/Netgear I am not aware of?

Thanks for the help!

I wanted to make sure of one thing. Did you mention that you tried this with WEP disabled and no encryption enabled at all?

This is a frustrating experience that happens all too often. I have a few questions and some things you can try.

1. Is the NetGear WG311 a new card or used?
2. Are you sure that the card is working correctly?
3. Does that computer have a third party firewall or any security applications?

The 169.XX IP address is indicating that the adapter is not getting the information from the DLink 524. Here are a few tests you can try.

..1 Open command prompt and ping 127.0.0.1
....If works then your IP stack is considered initialized
....If failed then stack failure and TCP/IP needs to be re-installed
..2 Open command prompt and ping IP address of local host, even the 169.XX.
....If works the NIC is working
....If failed then hardware/driver problem with NIC.

Thanks for the response this morning. Yes, tried with all security disabled. The WG311 is in a brand new formatted w2K system with TCP/IP enabled. The WG311 software shows the card working, light is on, sees the network, supposedly "connects" to it, however, as you mentioned, the 524 is not assigning an Ip address to it.

I did ping 127, worked fine. The current IP address of the netgear card machine is 169.254.59.77 with a subnet of 255.255.0.0. I pinged the machine's own 169.xx address, and it worked fine as well. However, pinged local host located at 192.168.0.1, nothing. I did change the tcp/ip settings to match one of my other functioning wireless pc's with a different 192.168.0.xx setting...IPCONFIG shows it...but still won't connect.

The Netgear is an ebay used card. There seems to be no basic "hardware" issues as being defective. Proper Netgear version software is installed and running fine. Interestingly enough, the DI524 Dlink "sees" the mac address of the machine with the Netgear card. But that's as far as it goes! LOL!

Thanks!

Do you have another pc card wireless adapter to try in that particular computer?
Can you try the NetGear card in another notebook?

I also am afraid that another eBay mystery is upon us. I suspect that the card is bad. Everything you mentioned would not indicate that, but the only way to positively tell would be to activate a packet sniffer while that NetGear card is working and see if it is sending appropriate traffic.
