I'm trying to get RF Monitoring working on my laptop, but I'm having problems. It's a Sony VAIO, model PCG-K15, running Windows XP home. The onboard wireless card is registered as "LAN-Express AS IEEE 802.11g MiniPCI Wireless Network Adapter". The default driver, is an atheros one, so I went to http://www.wildpackets.com/support/product_support/airopeek/hardware and downloaded version 4.2 of the "WildPackets Atheros Wireless Driver". I installed that, it enabled a lot more options than the default driver, but there's still no RF monitoring option I can enable. Windows registers the network protocol "Network Monitor Driver", but it's unconfigurable. Unfortunately, it still doesn't work. I've been using Ethereal to try and view traffic in promiscuous mode, but nothing is detected. Does anbody know how I would get this working, or can someone direct me to a pcmcia wireless card and a driver that works with rf monitoring on windows? Thanks for your time.
It just so happens that there is a new product out on the market that will do what you want. This is of course if you are wanting to stay with a MS operating system. Linux has many available options and the Linux live CD "Distros" will force the wireless adapters into promiscuous mode if you are patient and get the correct drivers.
This new device is not cheap. I personally have recently purchased one of these and it works great, just to be clear I have no affiliation with the firm. But CACE is a well respected organization, at least in my world.

Well, I don't have all that much money to spend. I'm not opposed to using linux, I've used ubuntu before. If there's a way for me to do this without spending much money that'd be perfect, but can you direct me to these drivers or a tutorial somewhere? I've used linux, but I'm by no means a skilled user.
