The speed on my wireless connection goes up and down. The signal strength is always very good but the speed flucuates. I have a Dell laptop and used the wifi then I tried a Linksys wireless card with the same results. My router is a Linksys. I know nothing about computers so any advice needs to be as easy as possible.
One thing you have to realize is that the signal strength indicator you get with the client application is not very accurate. Try getting the application called NetStumbler and see what results it publishes.
Also there could be many reasons for your problem. Typically low signal strength or interference would be the main culprits. Again NetStumbler find out if there are any other networks on the same channel as you are on adjacent channels. Also have you altered any of the default setting for the router or the client applications?
This link might be of some help as it explains in greater detail some of the troubleshooting techniques available to you.

And an external wireless adapter is usually better than an internal one. The router makes quite a bit of difference as well, and if you are interested, there are programs that will strip away pictures and the like from websites which would make them load faster.
