I am trying to set up a wired router to a wireless router.
I would just get rid of the wired router (Model no. R1524SU - Actiontec), except my internet requires the phoneline (it's a modem -DSL connection) to function. The router has a phone-in port and 4 ethernet ports for connecting 4 computers simultaneously...
When I try to connect my wireless router (Model - Netgear WGR614 (V6)), the network will work for a small amount of time and will then kick out on me - I will experience frequent connection problems and the like. How can I connect the two together so that they will function correctly together?

What I've tried so far is this:
On router 1 I didn't change anything, on router 2 I disabled DCHP.

I set the IP for router 2 to 192.168.1.2 . IP for router 1 is 192.168.1.1.
I set up WPA with a 90 min swap

Everything works fine... almost. My wired PC network works great, and the wireless seems to work... except my PSP is the only device that can connect to it. When I try to connect from my notebook it will try to connect for like 15 minutes and eventually issue me a auto private address. WPA and everything is all correct... why is it that my PSP can connect but not my laptop?
(The guys at CNET forums have helped me get this far... I can post the link to the origional posts if you all need it. They won't talk to me anymore... haha, I bothered them too much, I suppose)
Thanks all, any help is much appreciated...

Change where the cable from the 1st router plugs into the second router. It seems like you have it plugged in the WAN/Internet port. Move it to one of the 4 switch ports. See if that helps.

Yeah, I did that when I set it up. The cable from router 1 is in to router 2 port 3

I'll draw this for you all, if it helps
>>> =wireless ---=wired

Internet (phone line) ---router 1---router2>>>>
A pc is connected to router 2 via ethernet

My wireless PSP will connect, so will the wired PC, but not my notebook...

When you are trying to connect the notebook, get to a command prompt and try the command ipconfig /all. Publish it here, please. Also do you have any firewall or Internet security suite applications on the notebook?

psp connects just fine - ip is issued without problem, but for some reason router won't issue one to my notebook...
And firewall is integrated in panda suite 2005 - though I shouldn't need to disable it?

Thanks for everything.............

Are you saying that the cable from router1 is connected to a switch port on router2? Then when the notebook is connected using a cable to one of the other switch ports it does not work? It has the correct information. Or are you trying to connect using wireless? If so are you disconnecting the wired connection before you are trying to connect via wireless? Also for the time being disable encryption, so that it could not be an issue.

ug-gamer
08-18-2006, 11:54 AM
OK I will disable encryption, but no, the wired internet works, no matter which router is in use. The only problem is when I try to connect via wireless. I do disconnect wired before I try wireless

M/Q

OK, then please post the ipconfig /all command when you are trying to connect via wireless only.

Ya know, it kinda scares me, once I disable the wpa encryption and password.... it works just fine... at least it does for now.. not sure about reliability - when I foolishly connected my router 2 to my router 1 long ago and didn't change anything, it would work for like 10 minutes and then kick off. So is there no way to secure my network... do I have to leave it without wpa?
Oh and it is working just fine but it says i'm not connected... what's up with that? Maybe I just need to restart.

Anyways, here's the cmd info...

How many computers are you talking about here? I had one connected via cable, one connected via wireless and a PSP connecting via wireless.

ug-gamer
08-18-2006, 02:19 PM
OK, sorry, yes, too many computers. There's 2 desktops, a PSP and a laptop. One desktop is wired where the router is, and the other desktop is in another room (which I bought a lynksis reciever for - it's b/g external). I can't wire the other desktop because there is no modem port to connect a router to recieve the DSL connection...
Sorry about all the confusion...........

spoke too soon about the laptop... wired connection did kick out

ug-gamer
08-18-2006, 02:57 PM
I suppose this is possible, and sorry, I have myself confused, and it wasn't the wired that kicked out on my laptop - it was the wireless (relating to my last post).
So I suppose I should buy a new router... any recommendations? (I know this topic should probably now be bumped)

Is this how the network looks?

Internet

........|..<>..<>..<>
........|..<>..<>...>- PSP (works?)
........|..<>...>- Notebook (works?)

Now please set it up as explained, turn off encryption, make sure all of the wireless clients are using the same SSID and publish the ipconfig /all from the computers that do not access the Internet.

OK Here's my diagnostics on all the equipment.
Encryption is off.
Your diagram is correct, though note that 'desktop2', 'notebook', and 'psp' are trying to connect wirelessly.
And my notebook will work for a short time when i restart it and connect to the wireless. my other wireless pc, though will never get an IP issued.

Wired PC (desktop1) - internet works. (through netgear wgr614, ip 192.168.0.2). No problems.

Wireless PSP - for reasons i can't explain, connects to the network, wirelessly, just fine, no problems. (though only tested in short times)

Wireless PC (notebook) - cannot connect to wireless. ipconfig, when briefly working is as follows:
\wireless network connection
connection-specific dns - (blank)
description - intel pro wireless 3945abg
physical address - 00-13-02-1C-88-9F
dhcp enabled - yes
autoconfig enabled - yes
ip address - 192.168.0.5
subnet mask - 255.255.255.0
default gateway - 192.168.0.1
dhcp server - 192.168.0.1
dns servers - 205.171.3.65
205.171.2.65

after 10 min or so, wireless will stop working, a bubble will popup saying that it can't connect to the network
ipconfig simply states:
wireless network connection
media state - media disconnected
description - intel abg 3945
physical address - 00-13-02-1C-88-9F

Wireless PC (desktop2) - cannot connect to wireless. Lynksis wireless adapter software states that a connection to the router has been established, but "the internet could not be found". ipconfig is as follows:
ethernet adapter - wireless connection
connection-specific dns - (blank)
description - linksys wireless g usb network adapter
physical address - 00-12-17-76-5B-E9
dhcp enabled - yes
autoconfig enabled - yes
autoconfig ip address - 169.254.33.49
subnet mask - 255.255.0.0
default gateway - (blank)

like, by going to network properties? will the wifi network accept it if it wasn't assigned? And should I give it 192.168.0.8 or something? (also important to note that it's one of the wifi pc's)

quasirandom

like, by going to network properties?

The 'hosts' file is located in (I'm assuming you are using an Win O.S.) C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\etc\
and shoult take this form:

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.1 router.ughypergamingnet alias <=== a name you like to refer your router to
192.168.0.2 laptop.ughypergamingnet alias

and so on... o nevery host on the LAN;
================================================

given the fact that your network in now "ughypergamingnet"
you should edit the SYSTEM PROPERTIES on the CONTROL PANEL, choose to rename a computer or to add it to a domain==>clk CHANGE==>give the comp a name and a workgroup name (this will have to be done on every PC on the LAN) in the case above the WGROUP name is ughypergamingnet (you might change it);

=================================================

Now you should edit the LOCAL NETWORK PROPERTIES on the CONTROL PANEL,
(right clk) TCP/IP Protocol==> Properties==> General ==> Use this IP address ==> IP addr (192.168.0.x) ==>Subnet Mask (255.255.255.0) ==> Gateway (your router IP addr) ==>Server DNS (your DNS servers, althought some omit in a xDSL configuration to state this addresses) ==>clk Advanced ==> WINS ==>check the radio button "NetBIOS over TCP/IP

==================================================

On your router, refuse the services of a DHCP server, give it an addr and a netmask;

that's about all, in case op problems, we is here..

oh and reboot..!

ug-gamer
08-29-2006, 08:11 AM
Yes, I've been listening to you two and trying to decide what the next step should be. I suppose that it's time to edit the sys32 files, as quasirandom has stated. Sorry about the lack of info from the start, and sorry about the delay as well.
So onto the system files!

Hmmm.... seriously, though, what would help? Should I buy another router, would that solve the problem? Is the problem seeming to be with my netgear router?

Yeah, I did, I'm running on it now on my wired PC - desktop 1. The PC network works just fine, but I'm somewhat confused as to what to do with the other PCs that connect wirelessly - do I edit the hosts file on all of the PCs as well as manually configure IPs through control panel? If you want any cmd readings or if you want me to post the hosts file, let me know.

do I edit the hosts file on all of the PCs as well as manually configure IPs through control panel
yes

This are examples one of the hosts files..

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
10.254.12.1 tibet.sambadevel tibet
10.254.12.3 atlas.sambadevel atlas
10.254.12.4 linux.sambadevel linux
10.254.12.5 pangea.sambadevel pangea
10.254.12.6 gamma.sambadevel gamma
10.254.12.8 firewall.sambadevel firewall
10.254.12.10 router.sambadevel router
10.254.12.11 usb.wifi.sambadevel usb.wifi
10.254.12.20 router.wifi.sambadevel router.wifi

on any one PC, and on every other is exactly the same
the first spec on the left is the IP n° the second the full name and the third the alias (you can ping 10.254.12.8 or you can ping firewall...)

OK so I can't connect to the workgroup. My PC finds the wireless connection, uses the IP I assigned it, and can access the internet but only for a short while. Windows never even recognises that it's connected itself - the icon in the taskbar says it's disconnected and in the wifi search box it says disconnected. But, when highlighted, instead of saying "Connect" as a botton in the lower right corner, it says "Disconnect". So, net works for maybe 10 min and then randomly stops.
However, while it's connected for that short time, I try to quickly configure the control panel and the workgroup. I assign my laptop a name for the network and try to connect to "ESSENDONFOOTY", like my wired desktop PC is, and it'll say that the workgroup wasn't found.
Ideas?
Here's the file

192.168.0.4 laptop.essendonfooty alias
192.168.0.5 psp.essendonfooty alias

ug, you cannot assign the same alias (in this case: "alias") to all the hosts...
you could give the .0.1 host an alias such as "router", to the .0.4 "laptop" an so on;

Anyway, what is the configured default gateway for the hosts in your LAN? (I do hope .0.1 is)

Have you enabled Netbios over TCP?

Have you configured the right network card, in hosts with dual NIC's (Ethernet and WIFI) - presumably the laptop -?

Have you set the workgroup name (essendonfooty) on all the hosts?

From any given point in the LAN, what can you ping and what you cannot? I.E. from .0.4 can you ping .0.1 ? can .0.3 ping .0.2 ?
It would also be a troubleshooter, if you do the above ping test, first giving the IP address (#ping 192.168.0.1) and then executing a ping of the FQDN (#ping router.essendonfooty)

What is the outcome of a 'tracert router.essendonfooty' command issued from .0.4 ?

ug, when you are positive you operated all the needed changes, please post the output from the 'ipconfig' command, executed on each host in turn;

And, from now on, it would be fitting, if you would gather the "connected-status" from you router, and not from "whatever-icon on whatever-bar"

One last (for now) question: how did you assign the address to the router?
The obvious reply would be: I logged into the router, via a browser and did change the address.. Have you done so? and have you also disabled DHCP?

You will get there..!

Transparent Bridging (RFC1483 Bridged)
Obtain an IP Address through PPPoE
Obtain an IP Address through PPPoA (default and is currently selected)
Obtain an IP Address through DHCP
Specify a Static IP Address

Is that correct? DHCP is OFF. IP for router is in fact 192.168.0.1

Does my computer name need to match the alias I give on the system file? In other words, does it matter what alias I give to the certain IPs (other than my being able to tell which is which), and plus, does it matter what I put before .essendonfooty?
Basically, does the computer name need to match anything? If no, here's what I have changed it to now.
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.1 router.essendonfooty router
192.168.0.2 desktop.essendonfooty desktop
192.168.0.3 desktop2.essendonfooty desktop2
192.168.0.4 laptop.essendonfooty laptop
192.168.0.5 psp.essendonfooty psp

NetBios TCP is enabled. Laptop wifi connection has been configured with the IP listed above in "laptop".
After changing the hosts files on both my laptop and desktop1, the laptop can connect to the essendonfooty workgroup (this is all through wireless). I guess the alias that I set before ('alias') was what caused the problem.
As a sidenote, unless you tell me to otherwise, everything done with the laptop will be on wifi, so I hopefully don't confuse you anymore.

After restarting, being on the wifi network and connected to the essendonfooty workgroup (Yes! Progress!), here's the cmd readouts from "laptop" (192.168.0.4):

Pinging 192.168.0.1 :

Pinging 192.168.0.2 :

Also note that after the restart, the startbar is displaying that I'm connected to the wifi network, not just the symbol with an X (meaning I'm not connected despite what the wifi search program in windows says). However, though, after around 15 minutes, the connection fails and a bubble window says "Unable to connect to your perferred wireless network".
Except, what I don't understand is this: after windows tells me that it can't connect, pinging websites and the router still works. I still have apparent internet access.

Here is the cmd readouts from "desktop" (192.168.0.2 <wired> )

pinging 192.168.0.1

pinging 192.168.0.4

<the wifi connection on my laptop has stopped working - again, it only lasts 15 minutes - 5 showing it's connected and about 10 not showing it, but still working. Now when I try to ping anything from 192.168.0.4, I get either "destination host unreachable" or "could not find host www.google.com">
pinging www.google.com

pinging laptop.essendonfooty - failed as connection is no longer active from my laptop

Does my computer name need to match the alias I give on the system file?
Assuming that what you call system file is the "hosts" file, no, I mean a computer name should be; - laptop.essendonfooty - it should have a certain IP address, and can (can, not has to) have an alias, so that if you want to ping that PC, you can do so by pinging it's IP address (192.169....), by pinging it's hostname (laptop.essen...) or by just pinging the alias, so supposing the alias is 'laptop' you issue a : $ping laptop command;

192.168.0.# laptop.essendonfooty laptop <==== alias

It's important that every PC, has the hosts file, edited with the same information;

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.1 router.essendonfooty router
192.168.0.2 desktop.essendonfooty desktop
This config is correct

As a sidenote, unless you tell me to otherwise, everything done with the laptop will be on wifi, so I hopefully don't confuse you anymore.

It's perfectly allright, as long as in the Win network config you enable the right interface (in this case the wifi);

ipconfig from 192.168.0.4 (laptop)
Windows IP config
Host name : HPDV1000 (my computer name I set)
Primay dns suffix : (blank)
node type: unknown
IP routing enabled: no
wins proxy enabled: no

isn't the hostname supposed to be 'laptop.essendonfooty' !!

Also note that after the restart, the startbar is displaying that I'm connected to the wifi network,

Didn't I say that you wanna gather the info on the connection, from the router web interface? (open a browser, type your router address - http://192.168.0.1 - and log in) so that....
However, though, after around 15 minutes, the connection fails and a bubble window says "Unable to connect to your perferred wireless network".

....you can acquire more info (by reading the log phile, and other parameters) about the connection;

Here is the cmd readouts from "desktop" (192.168.0.2 <wired> )

pinging 192.168.0.1
100% success
pinging 192.168.0.4
100% FAILED. "Request timed out"
<the wifi connection on my laptop has stopped working - again, it only lasts 15 minutes - 5 showing it's connected and about 10 not showing it, but still working.

After having corrected the config, based on the late directives, if this still happen, please, from the laptop issue a $ping localhost (w/out the $) a $ping 192.128.0.4 and a $ping laptop (here 'laptop' is the alias) and report;

pinging laptop.essendonfooty - failed as connection is no longer active from my laptop

Usually, routers have a part dedicated to the LAN connection (go through it and check host IP address is correct and DHCP is off), and a part dealing with the wireless conn. ( make shure: Enable wireless networking - or something similar is checked);

I also assume that the laptop wifi card is configured with the proper SSID (the SSID of the router, which albeit being set with a default value you can reset to your preference),
and also check if the card has, as part of the drivers bundle, a program that tells you all the wireless AP in your area, this in the chance you might be associating with another one in your neighborhood); Disable WEP on both the router and the wifi card - will be reconfigured when everithing works smootly;

I cannot think of something else at the moment, so carry on with the reconfig;

did you turn off wireless zero configurator in system tools? The fact that your laptop works briefly and then stops after a few minute suggests that the windows tool and the wireless adapters tool are both vying for the same job. Turn one of them off, preferably windows. It's in the sticky at the beginning of this forum

OK so the good news is that my desktop2 (IP....0.3) (wirelessly connected through linksys software) is up and running. It can "see" my wired PC (desktop1) and vice versa. It's getting internet as well. So! Seems like we've solved quite a long and exhausting problem!
My laptop ("laptop") IP ....0.4 is not at the house currently, but I presume that after making the changes like I did with desktop2, it should be able to connect and have filesharing active.
Thanks you all for all that support, I think we've solved this one. I'll update about laptop2 as soon as I can!

Sorry about the delay. There seems to be something wrong with my laptop. My wifi connection is still up and down. If I restart my laptop, it'll show it's connected and then have a bubble popup saying it was unable to connect to "the perferred wireless network". I can refresh and it'll find the wifi router but it won't connect. If I try to connect manually (in other words by clicking connect), it'll show "waiting for the network" for like 5 min and that window, without changing, will close and I'll have internet and network connections, but the PC still won't recognise the fact that it even works... the taskbar item on the startbar will display "not connected" though I really am... and then 5 min later, the connection will kick out.
So everything else works. It's just the laptop now....
here's the IPconfig
ethernet adapter wireless net connection
desc: intel pro wireless 3945abg
physical address:00-13-02-1C-88-9F
dchp enabled:no

this is while the connection works.......
so do I just need to do what spiderbite says and disable "windows zero"? I have to make a desktop shortcut and click on it every time I connect? hmmm
