hi there folks...im pretty sure i got my wireless working but i still cant use the net on my laptop

i have pinged my router and that was fine.
i pinged the internet and i get a time out.

Intel Proset/Wireless says "You are connected to tablist56" which means im connected to the network yet my net is still not working?

if i right click, properties on my wireless connection it says...

124 packets send, 2 recieved.
signal strength - 5/5 bars
speed - 54 mbps

in the internet protocol properties i have check both boxed to obtain ip and dns automatically. using motorola sb4200 and dlink DI-524

thanks to anyone who contributes. its much appreciated.

if you are using any security (WEP) please check the key for typos.

remove the WEP functionality ( no security) and see if you can connect,

then re-type the key and see what happens

Are you sure the Internet connection is good? Have you connected via wired link and it worked? Could you publish the results for the ipconfig /all command here?

One quick test would be to ask where on the DI-524 you have the connection from the Internet device. Most likely the WAN/Internet port. That is OK, but you then have to configure the DI-524. Just for now move the connector to one of the 4 switch ports as well as making sure the DHCP server is turned off on the DI-524.

i have the first option checked on the wep dialogue screen, i think from memory there are about 5 different options?

im positive my net connection is good because on my desktop where my cable modem is connected, the internet works fine. its only on the wireless laptop the internet dont work.

any ideas? does wep and dhcp be turned off? im not sure if i have done that.

ill try it and post the ipconfig /all command here aswell.

anyone else with more info pls feel free to post here....

im using a cross over cable to connect the cable modem to the desktop (primary) and a normal ethernet cable to connect modem to router.

i dont think using a cross over cable makes a difference though.

You missed the most important question. Most likely you have the cable from the Internet device plugged into the WAN port. As well as DHCP active and in competion with the DHCP server of the Internet device.

cable modem is connected to my primary desktop pc through a usb cable, i have another cable (normal ethernet cable) coming from my cable modem to the WAN port on my router. the d link manual tells me that the supplied cable must go from the WAN port to the cable modem and then you connect the primary desktop to the 1st input port on the router.

are you saying instead the router should be plugged into the first input port rather than the WAN port?

the manual says the primary desktop computer should be connected to the WAN port and any additional computers get plugged into the additional input ports, in this case the additional computer is a laptop and is wireless therefore wouldnt be wired anywhere.

is any of that correct?

I would like to ask a few questions first. Are you sure the cable modem is designed to used both ports at the same time? That typically is not the proper configuration. I would first connect the router to the cable modem via Ethernet cable. In one of the switch port (just go along here), then connect the desktop into one of the remaining switch ports. Try the ipconfig /all command on the desktop and publish it here. Next try to connect with the notebook, no encryption and the DHCP server turned off on the router. Publish the results of ipconfig /all for the notebook as well.

If that works then there you go, this is the typical way to design an internal network

ok ill give that a go when i get home. the modem im using, even though it has a usb and ethernet port, i think u can only use one at a time.

That was I referring to and since you have the ability to use Ethernet and you also have the router it is not an issue, just set it up as I mentioned in the last post.

hurray!!! it all worked...i had to power cycle my router and modem and swap a plug around. i can share files, printers, internet. all good.

can i now turn my virus protection on and my firewalls?

both windows and norton firewall? i think i got 2?

what security measures should i now take and is there anything i can do to improve the speed of my connection? like tweaking etc?

thanks to everyone who helped!!! i really mean it!! haha
