Hi,

I was hoping someone could help with my wireless internet problem.
We've just set up a wireless network to which one laptop is connecting fine but there are problems with the second laptop.

There was an inititial problem with the second computer not getting an ip address but we've manually configured one and now it says that it's connected to the wireless network and has excellent strength but it won't access the internet.

All of the settings if we run ipconfig /all on both computers are identical except the ip addresses.

For the status of the connection on the laptop with the problem under activity it says it's sending packets but receiving none.

There is an unsecure network coming from the next door house which both laptops connect to and access the internet from without any problems. Our wireless network has WEP encryption.

Can anyone suggest why the one laptop can't access the internet?

thanks a lot,

Clive

Usually when a computer does not receive an IP address that means something is wrong and while making it a static IP addr seems like the logical thing to do, it does not solve the communications problem.

Does this problem go away if WEP is turned off? If so try using the hex code for a key instead of the passphrase.

I have this problem as well with my laptop, it was fine then all of a sudden when I turn it on after work it wouldn't connect to the internet, it's connected to the network and has excellent signal strength, but internet isn't working.

I've tried to repair the connection but it comes up with "Can't clear the DNS cache", I'm not sure what it is and what to do about it...

Most likely the reason the Internet is not working is that you are going back to the same sites you did at work. It is then looking locally for the correct address and router. Which is different because you are at a different location. Check out this link to see if it might help.

Thanks for that but all of a sudden the computer decide it can do that now and gone past that stage and can repair everything, but is still not being able to access the internet...

This is very weird as I tried my other adaptor to try and see if it's the internal wireless LAN card in my laptop but using my other USB netgear adaptor, I'm still unable to recieve internet access...

I really have no idea now... I've uninstalled Norton that came with the laptop, disabled all those firewalls... sigh.

Get to a command prompt and try the command ping www.yahoo.com. If that works let me know. If that does not work try ping 209.73..186.238. Let us know if that works.
