I just wanted to update y'all on the gear I'm currently enjoying. My 802.11b rig that is working fine for me includes the ZoomAir 4165 Wireless Gateway that has been rock solid - and some assorted cards including an ORiNOCO Gold and a D-Link DWL 650H.

I have a three level townhouse and I get excellent coverage throughout - even outside. That's pretty good considering that the Gateway/AP. I have two desktops hooked up to the Ethernet ports on the back of the ZoomAir unit - and two laptops with NIC cards. Why do I have 4 computers you may ask? I have no idea. They just seem to multiply.

So far so good - and I like the dual antennas on the ZoomAir unit - it looks way cool.

A lot of us are still learning how to use these things at home - so let's keep up a good dialogue about how to use 'em and what works, etc.

Your humble managing editor,
Peace out.

Explain gateway versus access points. I don't have four computers (just three, so far), but want to know how a wireless/wired mixed network works. My interest in a home wireless network comes not so much from a need of mobility, but to cut down on the necessary ethernet cables.

Should my main desktop PC with cable modem connection be able to go wireless and still provide a decent broadband signal to my other Mac desktops?

I have a cable modem setup (5 or so computers, for three people and a dog ) and I want to go to wireless. I'm using an Asante firewall/switch to provide access to 4 computers. That works fine.

How should I introduce wireless into the system? I thought replacing the Asante with a model that includes wireless would be the way to go, but maybe there's a better way?

Thanks,
Johnny
