I have a Mercury USB card connected to my desktop (running Win 98), and a BenQ PCMCIA card in my laptop (running Win 2K). They don`t seem to see each other on network neighbourhood, although the driver page for each shows they are on the same BSSID? This is my first experience of wireless networks so if I`m doing something stupid please tell me!
But I`m getting very frustrated!

Hi! I have a white stick so follow me.
In the configuration page for each unit check that they are both using the same channel no. and as channel nos. vary from country to country check that they are using the same location code (U.S., Japan, Etsi etc.)
They probably both have a scan facility and you should be able to sniff the air waves and find the Mac address of any detected devices.
If you can get them to see each other on the wireless network then you have to look at TCP/IP settings on each but lets make that stage 2
Good luck

DaveyD, thanks. I have checked all that and they see each other when I do a site survey. They say they are sending packets to each other! But the don`t show up in Net Neighbourhood, and I can`t find them if a do a search!
So you`ll have to continue guiding my with the white stick, and tell me what TCP/IP settings I need to check.

Confirm that you have any encription and access security turned off in your device configuration settings
Right mouse network neighbourhood on each machine and choose properties. choose the tcp/ip for the wireless device and compare the results of each machine. Make a note of the settings before fiddling.
My understanding is that if the netmask is (typically): 255.255.255.0 then the first three parts of the IP addresses should match ie. 192.168.2.*
The final digit would be the identity for the devices therefore192.168.2.1 could chat with 192.168.2.2

DaveyD, checker that I`ve got the IP addresses at 192.168.1.* and 255.255.255.0 guess this is OK. I have also huts got hold of a wireless access point (which is connected to my desktop, which I have also changed over to Windows 2k). SO I now know for sure they two are seeing each other with the wireless cards.
So it must be a TCP/IP setting problem that they are not seeing each other! So whats the next step?

Network neighborhood properties:
Identification:
Both computers to be in the same workgroup
Access Control
Share-level access control enabled
Configuration:
File and print sharing:
I want to be able to give others access to my files.
Click Tcp/Ip for the device.Properties
Should show client for and file and printer sharing for ms networks?
Click the device.Properties
TCP/IP is checked in bindings?
Are there any strangenesses in advanced settings such as different channel nos. etc.? Are they both described as stations?
It is annoying when things almost work isn't it
Press on
