I posted a legit question last night only to have it deleted .... for what? I dont know.
All I wanted to know is whether or not the Wi-Spy from MetaGeek.net is worth my money. No, its not a plug. I dont work for them. I dont know them. I dont get a commission for selling any of their products. I am not spamming the forums.
All I want to know is whether or not it is of any use to a newcommer to the field who cant afford to buy a Cognio or Bumblebee spectrum analyzer. Im only doing small home\home office installations at the moment but I still run into small interference issues and from what i read on the website, this device looks like it may be of some use to someone in my shoes.
All I want to know is if you guys think that this device is useful or if its a waste of my money!
Please dont delete my posts again, I am here for some information not to sell somthing that isnt mine!
Thanks again
Bryan
Well, I apologize if you were sincere in your thread. But I read it several times and did not ascertain any questions. It was just a mirror of the advertisement put out by the developer.
I would suggest wording the questions as such, since SPAM is a very real problem here and it will not allowed.
As for the application I have an aquaintance who tried it and was not impressed. It gives one hope in regards to informing you about RF other than 802.11, but the receive characterisitics are focused on 802.1. So it is not as sensitive to other forms. And it was not granular enough to isolate RF interference that was near an active channel/frequency. So IMO, it sounds good. But was ineffective enough to not trust.

Thanks M/Q
Sorry if i had worded my post in such a way that made it sound like spam.
Thanks for the info. i guess its a new product and ive not seen any reviews yet, although someone on alt.internet.wireless newsgroup has ordered it and will hopefully be giving us his review.
When you speak of the 'application' do you specifically mean the software application, or the package as a whole? From the images ive seen on the site the software looks like it could use some maturing. If that was your friends biggest gripe then im sure updated software will be avalible eventually.
BUt again as I said, Im not doing any hard core wi-fi installations so maybe somthing like this is a decent starting point. Anyone else have any input?
Thanks everyone
No problem and I tend to be a bit anal about SPAM.
My concern was not the software, but the sensitivity and isolation of the receiver portion. The device is basically a USB wireless network adaptor with software that is listening to different types of modulation along with 802.11 in the 2.4gHz range.
What I was refering to is when you have a tight band interference source, which most are and you have an active channel on the same relative frequency it will always give more emphasis to the 802.11 signal as the hardware was designed to do that. So you will not recognize any intereference sources. And to be honest that is the only thing that would make this device better than Netstumbler or Kismet. It also bothers me that there are no hardware specs on the device which is unusual as even SOHO USB adapters give those.
I know it is more expensive but if you are in the field and time is money. You will be better served by one of the best device/apps out there called AirMagnet. Your ROI will be alot better than you think as the number of times you will use it increases with your familiarity with the device. Great tool, and just to be anal again I do not work for them.

My fault bryan, I kind of saw it and thought the same thing and actually accussed you of that, maybe before you saw it, pre-deletion. It did sound like SPAM though so, bare with the MOD's because their position is a thankless one with a ton of headaches with spammers and malefactors doing all sorts of annoying things like making spam posts, testing the latest PoC's, and making mulitple accounts! I am in no way affiliated with this forum or it's operators; however, I have been in their position and can tell you first hand what it is like.
Moreover, the post was a textbook gureilla marketing technique, where someone from the company or someone they hire pretends to be a concerned consumer making a post in a forum.
@ M/Q: I noticed that you get hit by bots like daily which screw up your stats. I could probably help you to thwart some of it if you want. Don't know if you can write code and if so, what languages but since you have been super helpful to me, I could give a little back with helping you bring the abuse to a moderate level.

Well thanks guys. I didnt realize that I was posting like a spammer heh :)
Im going to just wait for reviews on the product. I just dont have 3 grand to put towards a spectrum analyzer.. I dont have 1 grand either.. heh. Im sure the ROI would be in my favor, but at this point i just dont have the extra money. hopefully in the future i will.
It looks like this is the first device the company made.. maybe with feedback from customers they can improve and maybe then it will be a bit more usefull.
In any event, thanks for your help guys.
