It is a set of standards that are setup and based on the 802.11 IEEE standards. The term WiFi has been loosely used to mean many things but if you remember it is related to the 802.11 wireless standards you will not have a problem.

WLAN is a network that is inter-connected using wireless methods rather than the the normal Ethernet cables. The WiKi definition is very good, check out this link.

Simplistically the WLAN is a local area network that uses wireless methods to inter-connect the nodes. And the wireless technology is controlled by the WiFi or IEEE 802.11 standards.

As for advantages the only two real advantages is that you do not have to run cables, and you have the ability to move around within the coverage zone and still be connected to the LAN .
