One of major advantages of a VoIP phone is its ability to send data alongside voice. This capability makes a VoIP phone more like a data terminal.
However I sense none of the big VoIP phone manufacturers making any effort to enhance text entry capability of VoIP phones. What we currently have is the same tedious and impractical multi-tap: press key 6 three times for O; press key 9 four times for Z, etc.
With the current assets existing on a VoIP phone (i.e., touch screen, larger area, powerful processors, ample memory, etc.) there is an opportunity to become creative and include more efficient text entry methodology on voip phones.
There are many such systems available, designed for smaller or touch screen devices. My favorite is MessagEase by Exideas (www.exideas.com). They even have a mock up model of a Cisco phone on their site.

I use their software on my Palm and it works great. Using it on a voip phone will be even better.
