I have a couple of Lucent Wavelan Ethernet to Wireless coverters and want to see if I can set them up as clients for poitn-to-point connections. However I am running into problems from the word go.
I've connected to unit to a spare ethernet NIC in my PC (WinXP Pro) pwered the thing up, all the correct lights are on but when I start up the Wavemanager EC I get the following error message: "Communication with the selected EC timed out"....
Could this be due to a different card being inserted in the unit?
I have tried an Enterasys card and a YDI card (both rebadged Orinoco Silvers IFAIK).
Can anyone shed any light on this?

This is a real old question, so the reply is probably too late to do the original poster any good, but since I found this via google, I thought I'd post the answer now that I've found it to help out anyone else who has the same question.
Your PC must be on the same IP subnet as the EC box in order for WaveManager to find it. By default, the EC box is set to 10.10.10.128. So, you'd need to set (at least temporarily) the IP address on your PC to something like 10.10.10.129 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
If your EC box is not using the default factory setting, it can be reset by pressing the tiny button in the hole next to the ethernet connector with a bent paperclip. Hold the button in while the power is on until the power led starts to blink red. (Don't hold it any longer than that)
Once you've found it with WaveManager, (default password is "public") you can reset the IP address of the box to something else. Keep in mind that once you do that, you'll need to change the IP address on the computer to something on the same subnet as the new address in order to continue talking to the box.
Also, if you're trying to use the telnet based administration mode mentioned in the documentation, I've only been able to get it to work from the wireless side, not the ethernet side.

It's an old question alright, but still helpful.
While we're on the subject; I've still got a few of these converters but have mislaid the software cd's. Does anyone know if I can d/l the software somehwere?

The ownership of the Orinoco product line has changed hands a number of times since Lucent spun it off. At the time of this writing, it's held by Proxim.
You can download the software here:

Look for the download link on the left side.
