Setting up a new network, trying to get the following going:
dsl modem->wireless router->a different wireless router->wired/wireless stations

basically, I have the first router working fine with its ssid, wep encryption, and all stations which will connect to it daily can connect ok. Trying to add a same model router (dlink di-524) as an access point in a different room, receiving internet signal wirelessly from the first router, and distributing it to a laptop connected to it wirelessly and a workstation (or more eventually) connected either wirelessly OR wired.

The first router is set with DHCP on and to address 192.168.0.2. The DHCP range is 192.168.0.100-199. The AP is set to 192.168.0.1. DHCP is turned off on the AP.

As of right now, I can connect wirelessly to the AP and get into the router settings, I however, can't get connected to the internet. I also get an autoconfiguration ip address of 169.254.73.240 on the laptop I'm connecting to the AP with.

I know I'm missing some info here, but not sure what. How do I get the AP to connect correctly to the wireless router, and then give access to the internet to the stations connected to it, and also, allow the first router in the chain to be the one in charge of distributing the ip addresses?

you are not getting dhcp on your laptop from the WDS connected access point.

Only enable dhcp on your router disable on the access points.

you could try manualy configuring a ip address, default gateway and dns and associate the the WDS access point and see what happens.

I would guess that the WDS link between the 2 access points is not set up correctly.

They both need to be the exact same brand and model access point, be set on the same channel with the same ssid and have eachothers MAC in the WDS and be within 50% signal range of eachother.

thanks for the reply. As it turns out, WDS is not supported by the routers in use...
