I have internet hooked up on my lap top and I am getting my connection from my best friends wireless router. We are splitting the bill. The problem is, I would like to get the internet on my desktop computer as well. I have cat5 running from my laptop to my desktop and I can access my laptop files. I just can't get the desktop to connect to the internet that my laptop is wirelessly recieving.

Is that even possible?

I keep getting an error that says, " Conflicting ip address " and I tried to "IPCONFIG/RELEASE" to renew my IP address on my desktop computer so that they wouldn't conflict or whatever the problem is. But when I try to do the release and renew, it keeps saying, " The adapter isn't permissible... blah blah blah " or something like that.
Anybody have any ideas?

What wireless router are you working with? Most home use wireless routers also have wired ports that you should be able to use.

He has the wireless router in his home and I am just connecting wirelessly through my laptop card. But, if it still matters, I'm using a linksys.

Thanks

The setup you describe -- the laptop getting wireless Internet access, then connecting to a desktop via Ethernet -- would require using Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (assuming both computers are running Windows). there's lots of tutorials on running ICS at www.practicallynetworked.com.

HOWEVER -- I wouldn't wish ICS on my worst enemy. It's a bear. Planet is right -- if you can plug that desktop directly into the router via the Ethernet cable, you'll probably be all set. But sounds like you're in a different house, so that won't work.

The best option would be to buy a USB or PCI-based Wi-Fi adapter to stick in/on your desktop system, so it can also use the wireless connection. They're cheap. I just found a D-Link USB 802.11g adapter on amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002DQUHC/qid=1119641911/br=1-5/ref=br_lf_pc_5//002-0008109-5849631?v=glance&s=pc&n=1194492) for 37 bucks.

Good luck with it, and let us know how you proceed.

Thanks guys, I'm sure I'll figure it out sooner or later.
