I'm setting up an outdoor wireless network in a camp that uses a diesel power generator (not that the fuel type matters). I'm wondering if that could somehow cause a problem with my wireless signal. Power lines are run from the generator to the buildings on the property (above ground).

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Tyler,

A diesel power generator will be less likely to interfere with your radio sytem than a gasoline generator due to the fact it has no sparkplugs, sparkplug wires, or coil. The power lines might be an issue however but I don't think it would be a major one.

Thanks Conn. What about running cat-5 cable along with the powerline for a distance of about 50 meters... can this affect the signal coming through the cat-5 cable? I want to run cat-5 from one building to a tower 50 meters away which will have the WAP and antenna on it.... and tracing the power lines is the most efficient way for me to do it. Will that be a problem.

Thanks! Ty

Your length should be OK, cat-5 is rated up to 100m, but you may get interferrance from the power line.

Yeah, I'm mostly concerned about the power line causing interferrance with the cat-5 cable... anyone know if that is a major issue... they will be right next to each other.

Ty, do not run cat 5 along powerlines. Too much EMI. Find another route.

okay, thanks! I've just discovered another route to run the cat 5... I can run it with a phone line, that should be fine, right?

If need be, I know that you can “cross” the power line by running the cat5 cables perpendicular to the power lines but you should never run them parallel at least within 3 feet of the power lines due to harmonics, I mean, not that I've done this myself and had to take everything out and do it again over another route and waste lots of time and money or anything like that. Its just what I've read :D
