I am attempting to create a single network with 5 Proxim APs.

I have attempted to use Proxim WDS (wireless distribution system - repeater mode), but the performance was dissapointing.

I have brainstormed the following scheme:

First, setup each AP with the same SSID and same security. Then, setup a main AP to act as the DHCP server, configure other AP DHCP server to relay to this main AP.

Has anyone implemented this scheme before, if so...how did it perform? I am in the process of doing it now.

Snoop,

If you have a hard cable to each AP via a swicth it will work great.

internet --> AP w/DHCP --> switch --> 4 other AP no DHCP.

If its a different setup please explain

I am attempting the same thing. The speed is fine for me .. the problem I am having is this. I have on AP acting as the Primary with a hardwire to the network the others are partner ap's. I have the primary acting as the DHCP server and also doing Mac address filtering. As long as I am in range of the primary I get assigned a DHCP address and MAC filtering works fine, but as soon as I roam into the range of one of the other 4 I no longer recieve a address via dhcp and the mac filtering no longer works. In other words the primary AP cannot pass the DHCP and MAC authentication to the other partner access points.

Any ideas would be welcome.

i couldnt see this working without some kind of magic. the first ap will only do mac address filtering on the wireless side. as far as i know the firmware will not support filtering over the eth interface. as far as dhcp, you will need to run all the other aps in bridge mode so the wireless and eth interface will be interconnected. when it is set for routing (by default) it will block all dhcp and act as a firewall. some routers will not allow bridging. but a way you can bypass it is to set up the ap with a static ip and plug the network cable into a port other then the wan port and disable dhcp on the ap. this will bridge you to the first ap. mac address filtering will have to be installed on all aps if you need that.
