I currently have an ADSL USB modem for my internet connection. My Windows 2000 profesional computer works as the internet server with windows 2000 internet connection sharing. I would like to switch the network to wireless but i have to stick to my current internet connection. I plan to buy one wireless router and network cards for the computers. The network would have 3 computers appart from mine.

Would the following work?:

Have my computer share the internet connection throught an ethernet cable connected to the wireless router. (keep current settings)

Not connect the router to any WAN and disable DHCP on the router to keep my pc as the DHCP server.

Would the router work as a switch only? Is there any problem if I asign a permanent IP to the wireless router while having my windows 2000 pc as the DHCP server?

Thanks for your help.

David: I'm not following why you "have to" stay with your current set up. if your' getting a router, and have aDSL, why not plug the DSL into the WAN port on the wireless router? that's what they're made for.

Internet Connection Sharing I would not wish on my worst enemy. That said, you might find some confirmation on whether your setup would work in the ICS tutorials at PracticallyNetworked.com. But I don't think it would do work. It's just not what the routers were designed for. It might work with just a simple access point (which would lack the routing functions and the Ethernet ports). But again -- why bother?

The problem is that my current ADSL modem is USB-only so i cannot simply connect it to the router. I'll check out the tutorials you suggest.

Thanks for your reply.

I see, sorry -- it's been a long while since I'd seen a USB based broadband connection.

Is there any reason you can't upgrade to get an Ethernet based DSL modem? It might cost you a few bucks with the phone company (or whever is providing the DSL), but is likely worth it to avoid the headaches of ICS.

THo really it shouldn't cost anything -- I've had family members with DSL and cable swap modems in and out as needed before.... just tell them it doesn't work. In this case, its no lie in that it doesn't work the way you want with a router....
