I have a laptop with a Linksys WPC54G wireless adapter card talking to a Linksys WRT54G router. The driver installs, the laptop sees a strong network signal, but it won't connect. I've tried it with and without encryption.

I also tried another card (TrendNet) and got the same result. I tried another laptop on the same network and it connects instantly using either card. So there's something in the first laptop blocking a connection. Any suggestions as to what it might be?

Try cleaning out the following folders:

Cookies
Temp
Temporary Internet Files

HOpe this helps.

Some questions:

What is your operating system? And, are the operating systems of the two laptops the same?

Do you know what IP address -- if any -- is being issued to laptop number 1 and latop number 2?

Have you attempted to release the IP address and then renew the address? This is sometimes referred to as "repair."

Basically, it appears that laptop number 1 is not being issued an IP address on the network.

OS is Win XP in both cases (well, OK, one of them -- the one that works -- is Win XP Tablet). Not sure what IP address is being issued to the laptop that works. The laptop that doesn't work never gets an IP address assigned.

Yes, I tried the "repair" option. No joy there.

I agree, it's not being issued an IP address. The big question is why? I'm going to try Chutsmans's suggestions.

The problem is this is a (very non-techie) college student's system so there's no telling what kind of crap he's got running.

Try this as well...

Go to START>RUN

Type: ipconfig /release <ENTER>
Then START>RUN
Type: ipconfig /renew <ENTER>

See if that doesn't flush out the IP problem
