- Software to install: null, nada
- Hardware required: your bare router
- Costs of the service: zip

To see the prototype working, configure your router as follows:

- enable DHCP

- set DHCP parameter "DNS" to 82.161.30.183

reset your wifi card, open your favorite browser and try it.

Hey,
just read your post and it sounds great. Just I've got a linksys WRT54G but not sure how to set up what you say. Any tips?

Thanks

Paul

Paul, you need to confiure the Lynksys by typing http://192.168.1.1 in your browser with your PC connected to the router.

Then if you did not set your admin password use the default "admin"

then once you are logged-in navigate to the DHCP page which looks like this:

http://olotwireless.net/catala/wrt54gbis/afotoslinksys/dhcp.gif

and fill-in all three fields "Static DNS" 1, 2 and 3 withe the IP I gave you in my first post. Then you are set to use the portal. To remove it just reset the 3 DNS entries back to 0.0.0.0

Hey. I'm looking in to doing something like this. I've come across a few hurdles though and I'm wondering how (or if) you were able to get around them. Mainly, I have worked out (okay, in my head anyway) that if I setup a DNS server on the box to forward all requests to the web server, I can log people in or if they are logged in, forward them on out. However, how do I handle things like printer requests and MSN, etc.?

who's DNS server is 82.161.30.183? be aware this could potentailly be a Phishing attempt.

if you want a cheap captive portal get an old comptuer and install www.ipcop.org or get a Linksys WRT54G with OpenWRT firmware.

Using a rogue DNS is not the answer - it poisons ARP cache for friendly visitors as well as unwelcome intruders. myWIFIzone uses session hijacking and redirects to a captive portal. That way ARP cache is untouched and intruders are still blocked. Download from here (http://www.myWIFIzone.com/download1.asp) (It's free)

I see no relationship between your post and the original poster, as you do not provide any kind of DNS service.

The thread is not about DNS service - it is about a captive portal service. DNS is just one way of redirecting to a captive portal. We suggested another.

If you read the very first post that is exactly what it it. And umdivx caught it right away. Why would you want to have your DHCP server to broadcast an unknown DNS server to all of the clients. There is only one reason to do that. Your link would be useless if that DNS server wanted it resolved to a location of their choice.

redirecting you dns is a poor way to set up a capive portal by simple setting my own dns on my computer it will not ask the router for dns when searching for dhcp. just a side note it would be a good idea to find a dns that you trust and set it on your computer if you use public wifi you never know what info they are colecting on those dns servers.

Yes i agree i don't recommend dns redirection.
