DLink DI 524 802.11g router
using 64bit WEP encryption
Desktop with Linksys 802.11b USB adapter. The connection either drops constantly and at times I cant repair the connection because it fails to get an IP address. Other times it says its connected
but there's still and X through the wireless connection icon and yet Im on the internet (another icon appears in network connections that says internet connection)
Firewall is disabled. Have tried both with and without encryption. Maybe I should use stick to the same vendors is all I can think of.

1) Please try using static IP adresses instead of dynamic. And try disabling wep with static IPs.
2) Reset the router to factory defaults upgrade software & do the asme for the client adapter drivers.
3) Verify that the wireless zero configuraqtion of window is not interfering with the client adapter utility settings if you are using it.
4) With regards to the icon, these are usually bugs in the client adapter utility software which do not change the network connection Icon of windows.
This would work smooth with wirelss zero config. but with a utlity software it may or may not work. But the connection would be seamless & up alwas. You can use the status of the clientadapter utiliy software for the connection.
5) If the isue persists, try runing a ping test between the wifi route & the system with the client adapter. And see the output.
6) At time sthere migt be interferce which might cause this too; try tweaking the configuration for channel selection/transmit power/speed and see if it makes any differece.
That's it for the moment. Good Luck!

thanks for the input.
Well I switched to a belkin wireless USB connection and the connection didn't drop all night. I was using the Linksys usb adapter but the Wireless Monitoring software that came with it doesnt work with Windows XP so I was letting Windows control my wireless connection and that could be one of the reason because now I switched and Im using Belkins software with the Belkin adapter and the connection is more stable.
