im trying to setup my laptop as a wireless router. i am using a proxim orinoco gold card. os is win2k adv srv SP4 with ISA server installed for firewalling and routing.
dhcp is enabled.

ive been doing tests with several different wireless cards for client connections and noticed a big problem.
-----
one card could see the ssid, connect, immediatley get an ip and browse the internet fine.

the 2nd card could connect but not get an ip.

the 3rd card could see the ssid but not connect to it. (this crappy card does not have ad-hoc support)

[all 3 cards can connect to a normal access point fine and browse.]
-----

the orinoco card on the server is in adhoc (only way i could get it to broadcast a ssid)

when clients connect they get switched to adhoc mode - on a normal access point clients do not get switched to adhoc rather they stay in infastructure.

how can i get my wireless card to act just like a normal access point/base station.
plz help :)

well, there is a problem with the cards when one tries to connect in an ad-hoc network....

i also done some tests and i've discovered that if you want your ad-hoc network to work, a possible solution could be to insert as IP adress of your gateway the IP adress of the computer that you've created your network upon.

well ive done alot of reading and found out 2 things.

1.) on older orinoco cards there was a registry key called "APMode" that could be enabled... this would make the wireless card act like an access point (also found that alot of their access points are wireless cards inside a box!)

2.) after contacting orinoco tech support with the same question (how to make it work as an AP), they responded that "this model does not have a switch to enable as an access point however, you can use 3rd party software to accomplish this.
unfortunetly we do not support this......."

so now im on a hunt to find this software, any help is appreciated.

You can do it in Linux using the host-ap driver don't know of anything that can do it in windows.

curious, the "host-ap" driver for linux is a modified driver?

It is a linux package that provides acces point mode support it was writen for prism based cards but I am pretty sure it will support the Orinoco. If not you can pick up a prism based card here.
