A telecommunications broker told me today that DSL is higher security then broadband over cable modem.

He said the cable is shared out among many users and those users can grab the traffic if they are into hacking. \

But a DSL line is a dedicated broadband line. And as such is more secure. So Federal workers would prefer the higher security of DSL or a T1 line.

This sound reasonable. Sounds readonable to me.

If the cable modem was the only thing between you and the outside world then yes you are on a shared network with everybody else.

Kind of like show all workgroup computers on windows....

But a nice linksys dsl/cable router in place to act as a firewall will fix this if set up properly....

The other people on the same line could track your traffic. See what you're downloading, maybe intercept passwords. It's a party line, and a firewall won't stop that.

Requires a little more expertise than your average internet user has, but not a lot more. We have a college with a computer science program here, so I wouldn't have a cable connection.
