Good morning all....

From previous threads, I was under the impression that for a signal to be usable and reliable, the SNR should range in between 25-30. I was just reviewing a case study on Vivatos switch, and according to it, at 304 yards distance, the SNR was only 17, which was the highest it got for the installation.

Am i misunderstanding the recommendation of 25-30 SNR??

Thanks!

I tend to think so...

Although 25 - 30 is excellent, if you can successfully pass traffic at the lower rate what's wrong with it.

The further the link the lower the number...If I remeber correctly the Old Proxim Tsunami gear used to rate in at around 17...

Bond,

Spider's right. As long as signal is above noise and it passes data...you have a link. In the case of Vivato (which is a very particular case) you have long range links (over 500 feet) which will show a lower SNR because the AP is much farther away than you would have in a typical hotspot type setting, therefore a lower signal. Also their noise floor is higher than a typical ap settup because they have 13 AP's in the panel which create a higher than usual (if there is a such thing as usual in wi-fi) noise level. When doing hotels/mdu/hotspots you want to shoot for above 15 SNR, usually about 75 dbm as you lowest in a given area. It is up to you what level of service and qualityof link to provide, you could get away with 7-10 SNR but the higher the number the better, or more reliable, the link. Hope that helped.

Thanks for the clarifications, it definitely helps.
