ouhk_student,

Normally 802.11 Wireless lan only go about 100 meters indoors using standard equipment. When non standard equipment is used it can go about 5 to 7 miles before running into possible compatibility issues due to the speed of light not being fast enough. With some chipsets and a driver that allows you to play with certain timings defined by the 802.11 spec, it is possible to extend the range even more however you introduce the possibility of incompatibility with standard compliant equipment.
