Hi. I am a newby to WLANs and have an application I want investigate. I have a very good friend who has a fiber connection at his office about 6mi. away . I do not have line of sight directly to his office but can do so via the homes of various friends in the area. I estimate that I can do 2 hops. The first hop would be around 3mi. with an additional hop of around 6mi. The last hop would be around 400ft to my house. What is the technology I should use if I wanted to purchase hardware for this WLAN? Can my friends also get high speed access in their homes on the way through? Are there any books you could recommend which would give me an overview of how to implement a network such as this?

Am I really dreaming if I think I have a hope of implementing this?

The cost of broadband or frame relay at you house will be less than the wireless setup you are considering. Home units are not designed for what you want to do and commercial quality point to point wireless is quite expensive and you must be licensed by the FCC.

Plenty of unlicensed band point to point and point to multipoint solutions. Western Mux, YDI, Wi-Lan are the few that come to mind, mainly because that is what I have used. All expensive though. Your right about that.

Gumly, with that many hops, us549 is right. It would be very expensive.

All, Thanks for the responses. Looks like I'll stick with DSL for the time being.
