:( I was wondering if someone could help?

I have a wireless netgear router and 2 wireless adapters, 1 USB, 1 slot type for Laptop.

Everthing works fine with the network when my router is broadcasting the SSID, but as soon as I turn the broadcast off I loose the connection on my desktop which uses the USB adapter. I also have a laptop that uses a slot type adapter which carries on working after the SSID is turned off.

Both computers have the SSID asigned but one works and one does not.

The only difference I can see is that one use XP Pro and the other XP Home?

I would really like to turn the SSID off as an added security measure.

Any ideas?????????

Since both of your systems are running versions of Windows XP, you might want to take a look at this Microsoft article regarding hidden SSIDs:

Good luck!

To isolate the problem, can you connect usb to your laptop, remove pc card from it and see what happens when you turn off SSID.

If the connection drops then it has to do something with your usb adapter/ or its settings.

If the connection does not drop, it has to do with the other OS.

With this we identify where the problem is, keep the laptop in the same position or closer to where you desktop is to eliminate another varibale which is physical location.

this is a known issue with some USB adapters. A customer of mine sent back to Dell literally hundreds of USB adapters, after they could not connect to "no SSID in the beacons" APs.

It's the adapter :(

I tried the suggestion of using the USB adapter on the laptop and it failed when SSID was turned off.
Looks like I will have to get a different adapter

Thanks for the help.
