Hello all

I would like to pick your brains Regarding buying a new Wi-Fi Router.

Firstly i am a Noob at this so please forgive my ignorance if i say Sumthing Stupid

Right i am thinking of going wireless at home as i have a Centrino laptop + a Computer both upstairs & Downstairs in my house + i also want to set up a computer in my Garage & i Believe Wireless is the only real option available to me. so i might as well jump on the bandwagon & go Wi-Fi. But i Also would like to Access my Companys Servers from time to time & we are about to Go VPN so i thought it would be Wise if Whilst i am Buying Wireless that i Should Get VPN built in to cover all Angles we are currently using Sonicwall at work so this would be the VPN type required

Please Can you Share some of Your Wisdom On which Wi-Fi Router you think would be the Best for my Needs

Many Thanks

The Linksys WRV54G is a good choice.

Piston,

I just want to point out that there is a distinct difference between VPN Routers and Routers that Support.

VPN Routers - like the model from linksys mentioned below are routers that act as VPN servers. In addition to being wireless routers, these devices also allow users from the Internet to connect to them using VPN. Buy this kind of router if you want to connect from the Internet to your computers at home.

Routers that Support VPN - Since most routers use something called NAT (network address translation) as both a security and a multiplexing measure (they enable multiple computers to share a single network connection and IP address), it causes all sorts of problems if you are trying to use a VPN client on your wireless laptop to connect to a corporate firewall. Routers that support VPN have features that enable you to connect to a corporate VPN and circumvent some of the NAT/VPN issues.

If you are only going to connect from home to your company's VPN, you will need the latter. That being said, not all VPNs are created equal. What you should do is find out what VPN your company is using (i.e. CheckPoint , Cisco, CheckPoint Next Generation, etc). and then research if that particular router you want to buy is compatible with that specific VPN.

For example - I have a D-Link DI-614+, which is compatible with my company's current CheckPoint NG VPN, but not the older 4.1 VPN.

Many thanks for your Reply & you are correct i am a little Confused on the issues Regarding VPN .
I will be connecting only to my Work VPN which is a Sonicwall TZ170 Firewall so i will try & look into the Compatibility of this with other routers

I have been looking at the WRV54G but i don't think it comes with built in Modem so a seperate modem would be Needed ???
I think other than that it has everything i need but there is also the FWAG114 which also requires a modem

Doesn't anyone make an all in one Router or is the Modem only required for Dial Up or Non Broadband Connections or do you always need a modem for any Wireless Router it seems a little Stupid to me to buy a Router then have to go out & buy a Modem As well surely that defeats the Object of Buying A router in the First place maybe i would be better off just Getting a modem & Wireless Switch & Screw the VPN

Any help would be Gratefully Appreiciated
