Hi Guys,

I need some help. I want to extend a wireless network to a building about a mile away. I know how to build a "cantenna" for the transmitting end. The receiving end needs to have a basic router for various desktop and laptop hook-ups. I do not need wireless at the receiving end does not need wireless through-out the building. I just need to extend wireless to that building.

Is it possible to us a wireless router as a receiver?

If yes, any suggestions on what hardware will work nicely together and any settings that wouldn't be obvious to the average geek?

The router unit would need a “repeating” mode. It will cut your bandwidth in half for the remote location. I would recommend Cisco products.

But you have a lot of other things that might be problems. Such as line of sight to the remote building, and more importantly the Fresnel Clearance Zone (it is line of sight for wireless signals which are larger then visual light waves), as well as RF interference. I would recommend you look into the tutorials on this site, read up and see the problems associated with the setup you have in mind. Get the full scope of what you are thinking about.

Good luck.

Most consumer grade WLAN routers (Linksys, Netgear, etc.) cannot act as a client (which is how you are proposing to use it at the receiving end). You need an access point or wireless bridge connected to a wired switch or hub at the receiving end.

Any particular models of access point or wireless bridge that you would recommend?

And is there a diffence between the two?

Thanks

never mind. I've researched the difference.

What I need to know is:

1.Will a standard wireless bridge (i.e: d-link WET11) need an external antenna inside the receiving building if I have something like a "cantenna" at the sending end?

Distance is around 1 mile.

Thanks
