I 'm using agere ap 1000 to broadcast 11megs from my breezenet backbone. Two maxrad 120 degree directional antennas to broadcast east and west( antennas are about 30 feet apart) either antenna experiance's lots of noise on channel 1.
A bit less on the west side. The backbone is on channel 6, west side channel 11. The Ap is atop the local hospital with the top of the elevator shaft and motors etc. (very old) Could these cause such interferrence? If so why? What about cell towers, this town is covered , and I can see the towers from the roof.

I think you are using two radios from your test.

The problem with the 2.4GHz band is that is is free and anyone can transmit on it. You may find there is sopmeone using the frequency that channel 1 is located. Nothing you can do about it, its the ISM band. There is not official frequency allocation.

As for Cell base stations then this is a controlled frequency and for celllfone comms the frequency is a lower so it goes further.

You do not say if you have a 100mw or 500mw AP. I assume 100mb, cellfones are much higher power that 100mw so the range is further, also GSM cellular base stations will allocated a channel to its the cellfone for its call. No other fone will use that frequency so there is no need to fight for space on the channel, 802.11 does not do this to the client; all the clients use the same frequency as the AP. I am not sure exactly, I will have to look it up.

The last para. is very simple and does not go into any detail. Just incase there is someone is reading that knows the details.
